Logic grammars and XML Schema

چکیده

This document describes some possible applications of logic grammars to schema processing as described in the XML Schema specification. The term logic grammar is used to denote grammars written in logic-programming systems; the best known logic grammars are probably definite-clause grammars (DCGs), which are a built-in part of most Prolog systems. This paper works with definite-clause translation grammars (DCTGs), which employ a similar formalism but which more closely resemble attribute grammars as described by [Knuth 1968] and later writers; it is a bit easier to handle complex specifications with DCTGs than with DCGs. Both DCGs and DCTGs can be regarded as syntactic sugar for straight Prolog; before execution, both notations are translated into Prolog clauses in the usual notation.

XML to Relational Conversion Using Theory of Regular Tree Grammars

In this paper, we study the different steps of translation from XML to relational models, while maintaining semantic constraints. Our work is based on the theory of regular tree grammars, which provides a useful formal framework for understanding various aspects of XML schema languages. We first study two normal form representations for regular tree grammars. The first normal form representatio...

XML schema validation using parsing expression grammars

Schema validation is an integral part of reliable information exchange on the Web. However, implementing an efficient schema validation tool is not easy. We highlight the use of parsing expression grammars (PEGs), a recognition-based foundation for describing syntax, and apply it to the XML/DTD validation. This paper shows that structural schema constraints in document type definitions (DTDs) c...

Testing Structural Properties in Textual Data: Beyond Document Grammars

This article describes research carried out in the project "Secondary information structuring and comparative discourse analysis" (SEKIMO), which is part of the research group "Texttechnological modeling of information" and is funded by the German Research Council (DFG). In our project, we use XML document grammars, i.e. DTDs (Bray et al., 2000), XML Schema (Thompson et al., 2001) and Relax NG ...

Schema Extraction from XML Data: A Grammatical Inference Approach

New XML schema languages have been recently proposed to replace Document Type Definitions (DTDs) as schema mechanism for XML data. These languages consistently combine grammar-based constructions with constraintand pattern-based ones and have a better expressive power than DTDs. As schema remain optional for XML data, we address the problem of schema extraction from XML data. We model the XML s...

A Tree Logic with Graded Paths and Nominals

Regular tree grammars and regular path expressions constitute core constructs widely used in programming languages and type systems. Nevertheless, there has been little research so far on reasoning frameworks for path expressions where node cardinality constraints occur along a path in a tree. We present a logic capable of expressing deep counting along paths which may include arbitrary recursi...
